Breaking Down The Best Bets On The Main Card For UFC 237

Is Rose Namajunas a good bet to win at UFC 237?

The Ultimate Fighting Championship will make its highly anticipated return to Brazil with an absolutely stacked card for UFC 237 in May. The UFC has made sure to overload the event with Brazilian MMA legends as Anderson Silva, Jose Aldo and Thiago Alves will all step inside the Octagon. The main event for this fight card is two years in the making with Rose Namajunas finally set to defend her UFC Women’s Strawweight Championship belt against Jessica Andrade. Here is a look at the best bets on the main card for UFC 237.

Women’s Strawweight Championship Bout

(8-3-0) Rose Namajunas vs. Jessica Andrade (19-6)
UFC 237 Odds: Andrade -125 at BetWay

Jessica Andrade has earned a shot at the UFC Women’s Strawweight championship belt with three straight wins. Now she will get the opportunity to fight for the title in front of her hometown family and fans. In fact, Andrade will actually be the sports betting favorite when she takes on Namajunas at UFC 237. Andrade, who is a very intriguing matchup for Namajunas from a style standpoint, is listed at -125 odds to win this fight outright. Andrade is one of the hardest hitters in the women’s division. She is also an excellent grappler. So how does she match up against the champion?

Andrade proved in her knockout victory over Karolina Kowalkiewicz that she has rare punching power for her size. However, Namajunas is a quality striker in her own right, as she showed in her first-round TKO win over Joanna Jedrzejcyk. Namajunas is a masterful technician, so Andrade will need to be careful not to be too overaggressive. In order to gain an edge in this bout, Andrade will need to lean more heavily on her wrestling ability. Namajunas isn’t the best wrestler, so this could be an area that Andrade exploits. However, even if these two go to the ground Andrade will need to be cautious.

Three of Namajunas’ last six wins have come via submission, with all three of her opponents tapping out after she locked in a rear-naked choke hold. Namajunas is a calm, experienced fighter that should benefit from the experience she gained going a full five rounds in the rematch with Jedrzejcyk in her last tilt. While Andrade is a very capable opponent that should be able to make this an interesting clash, the champion deserves the benefit of the doubt in this matchup. At +100 odds, the smart money is clearly on Namajunas to successfully defend her title with a victory at UFC 237.

UFC 237 Picks: Namajunas

Middleweight Bout

(11-4) Jared Cannonier vs. Anderson Silva (34-9)
UFC 237 Odds: Cannonier -163 at BetWay

The legend “Spider” Silva told UFC President Dana White that he wanted to be on the card when the UFC made its return to Brazil. Now he gets the chance to fight in front of his family and friends at the highest level one more time in the co-main event at UFC 237. Silva will take on another veteran in Cannonier, who at 35-years-old is still nine years younger than Silva.

Cannonier was coming off back-to-back losses when he scored a TKO win over David Branch at UFC 230. Now he is the sports betting favorite for this fight at -163 odds. For all that Silva has accomplished throughout his career, it’s clear that age has finally taken its toll on him. Still, Silva is an incredible tactician that should still have enough left in the tank to go the full three rounds versus Cannonier.

After forcing his clash with new UFC Middleweight champion Israel Adesanya to go the distance at UFC 234 in February, Silva comes in at pretty good value at +120. With the home fans behind him in his native country in what could be one of his final fights, the smart money is on Silva to find a way to get the job done and win this tilt.

UFC 237 Picks: Silva

Featherweight Bout

(28-4) Jose Aldo vs. Alexander Volkanovski (19-1)
UFC 237 Odds: Aldo -150 at BetWay

After a scare with a bacterial infection that sent him to the hospital in late March, Aldo has been cleared to get back to work in preparation for his scheduled UFC 237 showdown with Volkanovski. The former UFC Featherweight champion is coming off back-to-back TKO wins over Jeremy Stephens and Renato Moicano in his last two outings. However, he will face a very tough test in Volkanovski, who hasn’t lost a fight since 2013. Volkanovski is 16-0 over that span, including a TKO win over Chad Mendes in his last match. Coming off the biggest win of his career, the Australian has promised that he will send Aldo in to retirement in this one.

Both fighters have excellent striking ability, so there is a very good chance that this one is decided before the final bell tolls. Aldo is the sports betting favorite fighting in his native-Brazil, but considering how close these fighters match up on paper it might make more sense to take the value and bet on Volkanovski. At +120 odds, the smart money is on Volkanovski to win with a good chance this tilt ends via stoppage.

UFC 237 Picks: Volkanovski

Welterweight Bout

(23-13) Thiago Alves vs. Laureano Staropoli (8-1)
UFC 237 Odds: Alves -120 at BetWay

The UFC confirmed yet another Brazilian-native on the main card for UFC 237 with the addition of a welterweight bout between Alves and Staropoli. While he is longer a legitimate title contender, Alves did manage to squeeze out a split decision win over Max Griffin in his last fight. That victory combined with the fact that there will be hype about him fighting in Brazil might lead some to overlook that Alves is no longer the fighter that he once was.

Meanwhile, Staropoli made his UFC debut with a decision win over Hector Aldana in his native-Argentina. Coming off six straight wins, Staropoli will be eager to make a statement at UFC 237. The smart money is on the rising star to continue his impressive run with Staropoli recording a win over Alves in Brazil.

UFC 237 Picks: Staropoli

Lightweight Bout

(23-6) Francisco Trinaldo vs. Carlos Diego Ferreira (15-2)
UFC 237 Odds: Ferreria -163 at BetWay

A pair of fellow countrymen will clash in the first fight on the main card with Trinaldo set to throw down with Ferreira in a lightweight bout. Trinaldo is coming off an impressive TKO win over Evan Dunham in September. Now he is going to try to string together back-to-back wins for the first time since 2016. It won’t be easy versus Ferreira, who has strung together four straight victories including a pair of TKO wins over Jared Gordon and Kyle Nelson.

While Trinaldo has an impressive resume and skill set, Ferreira will be a dangerous opponent that could very well end this fight with his fists. It seems as though MMA fans have caught on to how dangerous Ferreira is as well, as he has moved from a +141 underdog to a -163 favorite according to the sports betting odds. This fight could very well go either way but the smart money is probably on Ferreira to extend his win streak at UFC 237.
